Board of Deacons

The Bible teaches that the role of Deacon is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. To that end, the Deacons at Westminster, minister to those in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith. Deacons help members and friends stay connected to the larger church by making weekly visits to those in need who are more removed from the worship life of the congregation. Similarly, they keep in contact with the congregation through hospital visitation, telephone calls, and the sending of greeting cards. A yearly coffee called the "Thanksgathering," celebrating those who are recipients of the visitation ministry, is held in November. In instances when a family or individual has a need for meals (birth of baby, illness, or ongoing medical treatment), the Deacons coordinate meal preparation and delivery.

Continuing their role as servants, the Deacons purchase the supplies for and prepare the table for the Lord's Supper each month. They also organize memorial receptions as the congregation and community have need. They serve as the liaisons between the congregation and the Salvation Army Food Bank-publicizing needs and delivering donations. Through their benevolent fund and memorials, the Deacons, financially assist many local charitable organizations.

Deacons are elected by the congregation for a three year term of service; they are ordained to the position of Deacons. The Board of Deacons is made of three equal-sized classes-4 beginning new service each year. Deacons are elected from among the church membership; one must be an active member of the church to be considered for the position of Deacon. Each year the Board of Deacons elects a Moderator.
