Pastoral Message
Dear Ones,

I hope you are well and managing the ongoing trauma of a global pandemic and a nation in turmoil. Please take care of yourselves-and each other. I know from conversations with you that many of you hurting, lonely, angry, struggling, fearful, and more adjectives than will fit here. Take a moment to reach out to one another. And think beyond the obvious. Just pick a person from the directory-you don't have to know them well-or, at all-and give them a call, write them a note, assure them they are not alone. Imagine how you would feel if you received such a communication. It would lift your spirits. And please, please, please, remember to pray-pray for yourselves, your family, our community, county, nation, and world. Time in prayer is never, I believe, misspent.

In peace,
Pastor Stephanie

Here are a few topical updates for you with the *newest ones at the top...

*Update from Re-Entry Taskforce
Last month the Session named 8 individuals to serve on the Re-Entry Taskforce. They are: Kathy Garde, Stephanie Hankey, Karen Huber, Mike Jones, John Mathis, Roger Noar, Rene Vance, and Sarah VanderVort. To date, the group has met for two Zoom meetings and will continue to meet weekly. You have probably already received their request to participate in a congregational survey. If you haven't already, please do so at your earliest convenience (see below). The Taskforce is working on recommended protocols, communication plans, and building configurations. They also heard a report from the Facilities Committee, who had an inspection of WPC furnaces and fresh air handling systems. There were several deficiencies noted at that time. The contractor's report and recommendations are expected later this week. Please continue to hold the Taskforce and the Session in your prayers.

The link for the Re-Entry Taskforce's congregational survey is HERE. The goal is to have one person from each household complete the survey for all the people in the household. Dear Ones,
  1. What a fun surprise to see so many of you drive by the church on Tuesday afternoon. It was so encouraging to the WPC who were able to be there. Thank you. Thanks to the HR Committee for organizing. Thanks to those of you who left signs, balloons, and gifts. Thanks to those of you who weren't able to attend, but who sent emails or called. We truly felt supported. Thank you.
  2. This Sunday, May 31 is Pentecost. WPC has a rich tradition of celebrating the day by asking people to wear RED clothing because RED is the liturgical color of the day. Go ahead and wear red, snap a picture, and then post to the feed. Also, in continuing the What to Do While You're Waiting sermon series, we'll be adding DREAM/CREATE. We're inviting you to reach out to the larger community in service in a creative way to mark the celebration of Pentecost. Need an idea? Use a piece of RED stationery to write a note of encouragement to a friend who may not be getting out very much. Buy RED groceries (Jello, jam, Campbell's soup, etc.) and donate them to the Salvation Army. Wear a RED mask and pick up trash on your walk. Wear a RED t-shirt and mow your neighbor's grass. Dream big. Be creative. Let the Spirit guide you. Take a picture and share it.
  3. And lastly, as I mentioned in my sermon on Sunday, Session formed a Re-Entry Task Force and that group will have their first meeting tomorrow. Please keep them in your prayers as they think about and plan their recommendations to present to Session regarding in-person worship.
In peace,
Pastor Stephanie

Grace and peace to you, Dear Ones,

On Sunday our New Testament scripture was from Philippians 4:4-7.

4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

My hope is that you are not worrying, but instead, are letting your requests be made known to God. Thank you for praying. Keep it up. It is a good use of your time and energy.

In peace,
Pastor Stephanie

Grace and peace to you, Dear Ones,

On Sunday I preached another sermon in the What to Do While You're Waiting series, focusing on exercise-physical exercise and spiritual exercise. I heeded my own words and have been doing a better job of physical exercise this week. Thanks for your encouragement. And thanks for those of you who have asked for some practical helps for how to increase your spiritual exercise. It's been fun to answer those questions. Here's a recap...

Where do you suggest I start with reading the bible?
A gospel. I think Luke and Matthew are great gospels with which to begin.
Are there any online materials I should know about?
Tons! www.biblegateway.com is a great resource.
YouVersion is my favorite bible app for smart phones. It has many, many reading plans and since most of us carry our phones with us, it's like having a bible with you at all times. You can read anywhere at any time!
I also like www.pray-as-you-go.org, which is also available by app. It has a 12-15 minute meditation that includes music, scripture, prayer, and reflective questions.

In peace,
Pastor Stephanie

*Update from Mission & Evangelism Committee
The Mission and Evangelism Committee recently made the decision to cancel the Foster Family Festival scheduled for June 6. Our hope is to host something in the fall.  When we contacted Department of Children, Youth, and Families to alert them of this, we asked if they had any current needs. The M&E Committee was able to purchase the needed items from Target, who provided free delivery two days later to a very grateful DCYF staff. Their staff is working primarily from home, alternating one person in the office each day.  Please keep them and the families they serve in your prayers.

*Women's Retreat Planned for August
The Adult Ministries committee is pleased to announce that we are going forward with our plans for a women's retreat the end of August (August 28-29).  "Cozy Mountain Lodge...Where Women Find Shelter in God" is our theme and we have a location and participant handbooks for 45 women.  Mark your calendars now and let's hope for the best.

*Update from Stephen Ministry at WPC
WPC's Stephen Ministers are meeting now through Zoom.  They are reviewing their training on giving Telecare.  They are eager to er our care to all that could use it.

*Zoom Community Office Hours with Pastor Stephanie
So far there doesn't seem to be much interest in a Zoom Coffee Hour, but there have been several requests for Zoom Community Office Hours with the Pastor, so we'll start that up on Friday, May 15 at 2 pm. You will have to register to get the Zoom link. I'll just sign on and see who joins. Stay for as long as you care to. Meet new people. Ask difficult theological question--but not too hard!

Sermon Copies
Some WPC members and friends who do not have the ability to join online worship have asked to receive printed copies of the sermon via mail or email. If you would like this service, please let me know.

Worship Aids
In addition to emailing the Worship Aids for Wednesday Evening Prayer and Sunday Worship, we're now linking them to a Google Drive folder via the Facebook LiveStream as well. That way, participants don't need to receive a church email in order to receive the Worship Aids.
Worship - Sundays & Wednesdays
We are continuing to live-stream Sunday worship at 10 am and Wednesday Evening Prayer at 6 pm.  Join us for scripture, prayer, singing, time with God, and time with one another.

Some Small Church Groups at WPC have continued to meet via Zoom and others have decided to wait until Stay Home/Stay Healthy has been lifted.  Are you missing connection at this time?  Would you like to be a part of a new Small Church Group via Zoom?  Let us know and we'll see what we can do/offer.  I'm thinking of a group that wouldn't take much prep...more of a get to know you/get to know Small Church Groups.

Because of a halt in user groups and the expectation that summer camp may not be possible, Tall Timber is experiencing financial difficulties.  The WPC Session authorized sending $5000 of funds in the Campership Auction fund to the camp to help sustain them at this time.  You may wish to give to Tall Timber as well.  One person mentioned they were going to send their stimulus check to Tall Timber.  Cool!  Donate HERE.

Food to Go
Food to Go continues to pack and deliver food bags to Anacortes School District students who experience a lack of food security over the weekends.  They were unable to hold their spring fund raiser because of COVID-19, and would be pleased to receive donations to support their ministry.  Check memo line:  Food to Go.

WPC Prayer Chain
The WPC Prayer Chain continues to pray and make updates to their prayer list.  If you have a prayer request to share, please send it to Anne officemanager@wpcanacortes.com, who will then let the rest of the Prayer Chain know.

Financial Stewardship
Thank you for continuing to be faithful stewards in this challenging time.  If you prefer to give online vs. mailing a check, the link for online giving his here.  You may make one-time or recurring payments.  Thank you.  Donate HERE.
